Obtaining Ecuadorian Nationality through Naturalization Letter🇪🇨

Legal reference: Art.8, numeral 1 of the Constitution: "The following people are Ecuadorians by naturalization: 1.- Those who has obtained the naturalization letter. "

In the case of obtaining Ecuadorian nationality through Naturalization Letter, the provisions of articles 71 and 72 of the Organic Law of Human Mobility must be complied with.

Letter of Naturalization (Article 71). It is the administrative act that grants Ecuadorian citizenship to foreigners, as determined by the Constitution of the Republic. People who can request the naturalization letter: Foreign people who have resided on a regular and continuous form for at least three years in Ecuador. Persons recognized as stateless by the Ecuadorian State and who have remained in the country for at least two years after their recognition.

Requirements for the naturalization letter (article 72). The following are required to obtain the naturalization letter:

Have resided on a regular and continuous basis for at least three years in Ecuador, or have been recognized as stateless by the Ecuadorian State and reside in the country for at least two years from such recognition. 


Be over 18 years old on the date of application. 


For persons under the age of 18, the consent of those who have parental authority or legal guardianship will be required, the opinion of the children and adolescents shall be heard in accordance with the provisions of the competent law. 


Birth certificate (country of origin), legalized, apostilled and translated into Spanish as the case may be, except in the cases of persons recognized by Ecuador as stateless people. 


Copy of the identity document or copy of the valid passport, duly legalized. 


To know the patriotic symbols. 


To present in an interview the reasons why he wants to acquire Ecuadorian nationality. 


Demonstrate licit means of life in the country, except in the case of minors under 18 years of age or persons with disabilities who are economically dependent on a third party.

Besides it is also necessary:


Migratory movement certificate updated.


Criminal Background Checks (State and Federal). They must be apostilled and translated.


Ecuadorian cedula and a certificate issued by Civil Registration Office which must show the date the foreigner received his first cedula.

Municipality certificate


IESS certificate

In accordance with Article 4 of the Naturalization Act, in addition to what has already been described, it will be necessary the following requirements:


Being legally capable according to the Ecuadorian laws


Possess patrimony, industry, profession or trade lawful that allow him to live independently.


To have resided uninterruptedly in the country for three years, at least from the date of issuance of the Ecuadorian identity card. This requirement shall not be required for foreign women married to Ecuadorians or widows of Ecuadorians. In the case of foreigners married to Ecuadorian women or having one or more children born in the national territory, the term of residence shall be reduced to two years.


To have shown during his domicile in the country, good conduct.


Speak and write the Spanish language


Have general knowledge of History and Geography of Ecuador; As well as of the Political Constitution of the Republic, in force on the date of filing the naturalization application.


Interview with the applicant about knowledge of the official language, History, Geography and of the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador.

The Human Mobility Authority will follow the procedure established in this Law to grant the naturalization letter to the foreign person. " COST OF PROCESSING: US $ 800 (Consular and Diplomatic Fees). US $ 50 will be canceled upon acceptance of the request, and once the resolution has been issued, the remaining value of US $ 750 will be canceled. In addition, the applicant must cancel the values corresponding to publications on the newspaper, and first registration in the Civil Registry (approx. $ 265 issue fee for Ecuadorian cedula).
